What’s your word for the year? A few years ago I started seeing people posting a “Word for the year” and wondered what it was all about? I liked a word for the year so much more than those New Year’s Resolutions that so many, including myself, would drop off after a few short months.

What is a “Word of the Year?”

This began as a German tradition, which I’m surprised I didn’t know more about this since my ancestors were German. But either way, the tradition dates back to at least 1971. Basically, they chose their word at the end of the year to define what that year had been about. I think somewhere between then and now we would decide to pick a year for the coming year to focus on. Thoughts? Many will say our focus of 2020 would’ve been the word ….pandemic.

My Words of the Years of the Past

One year my word was Forgiven, boy was that a tough one. I had to dig really deep to get through that year. But I did it! I forgave those in my past that had the biggest wounds. 2019 my word for the year was me, my health. That entire year I went through doctor appointments to make sure my health was good and to fix other things. I totally focused on myself that year, which as a mom I completely had dropped the ball on for many years. It was finally my year after so many bad ones. I also started walking more because I wanted to get back into better shape.

Growth was another Word of the Year. I had a lot of growing to do in life, in my body, mind, and blog. I didn’t get through them all but I worked my bottom off trying to get there. Last year was more of a phrase, “Stepping Out of my Comfort Zone.” I wanted to learn the things I actually liked and do them, regardless if I had someone there beside me to do them with. I wanted to have fun. Of course, the world shut down right after I began to do the fun stuff. I’m not done with that, but many were put on hold due to pandemic.

This year I was slightly more careful in picking a word. Who wouldn’t be after 2020? I wanted my word to focus on everything I’ve done so far, all the words have been building up into something. But I wanted it to matter more, it won’t be a word but a thought or a phrase. I want it to help me grow, become more confidant in whom I’m becoming, and still focus on my faith.

Notebook for picking word of the year

How to Choose that Word of the Year

It’s the 1st of January, the New Year, 2021, so if you haven’t picked one yet grab a word now. The word, unlike a resolution, will be the word you focus on all year round. If you get sidetracked or discouraged just think on that word and do it. This word should help you focus on that end goal, it’ll help re-direct your path, guide you, if you ever stray.

Write a list of 5, 10, or 20 words that you think you feel for 2021. You can put those words in a jar and draw one out. Or go over the list and see which one screams out for your attention, there could be a reason you feel so much connection to that word.

Words of the Year You Might pick:

  • Intentional
  • Awareness
  • Growth
  • Wealth
  • Joy
  • Dedicated
  • Do it
  • Step out of Your Comfort Zone
  • Me
  • Health
  • Blessed

What’s Next?

You’ve picked your word but it doesn’t feel special yet. So grab out a pen and paper and write things down you’ll accomplish, keep the phrase or word in your mind. Put it on the top of the paper and brainstorm. Write the word in big bold letters on paper and decorate it.

Decorate your journal or planner with that word. Write it on your mirror! Or print this bookmark out and write your word in and carry it with you daily. It is small enough to fit into a wallet/purse or even a book.

My Phrase of the Year: Take Chances

Yep, I’m not going with a word, but a phrase. There have been so many adventures I missed out on because either I was limited by money and didn’t have enough belief in myself to take the chance. Or I was just simply afraid to do it without someone standing beside me encouraging me.

Taking Chances in my Personal Life

I need to take chances. Life starts to become the same old thing, boring when you don’t do anything with it. As we all know from 2020 life can be pretty boring when you are stuck at home. I’m a stay at home mom, with all the kids going to school now. I want to feel useful. I want to know I am worth more, I KNOW I am worth more. I want to believe in myself more.

How can I do that? Simply by taking the chance to love myself enough to do the things I’ve ONLY dreamed of doing. I want to crush 2021 in every way!

How can I add taking chances to my personal life? Simple if I’m too scared to go out and see if I can roller skate I need to just “do it.” I may learn that I enjoy it still, sure when I was younger I fell a few times but I got back up. I used to love doing it. The truth is I miss the old me, I use to be. I want that confident person back!

Taking Chances in Business

If you don’t take a chance in business it isn’t’ going very far. I want to hit those dreams I’ve been thinking of for years but not taking the chance on doing them. Why haven’t I? Fear of failure, I guess. I want to make 6 figures, sure I’d be happy to see $50,000 but seeing $150K or something like that would be tops. I want to make the things I’ve always had in my head a reality. Time to even dust off those old manuscripts, start up those business ideas, etc. Time to just DO IT!

I have a few businesses. Did you know that? Sure, one is my blog, The Life of a Home Mom which I want to grow. I would love to see more readers, comments, and interactions on my blog. I’ve been told I should do more lives. So I have been starting to do short little stories on both Instagram and Facebook.

Would you like to see some lives?

I have ETSY SHOPS!

But as you saw I haven’t told ya’ll I have a few Etsy Shops for both physical (earrings) or digital products. Why not? I was scared of pushing myself on you. I need to believe in myself more. How many of you have a business but hate spamming others?

Spiritual Word of the Year and How to tie it together

Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Doesn’t the bible state that God wants to give us everything we want? So why am I scared? Why won’t I take the risk on something I only dream of doing? That needs to stop, I need to do it and let God push me forward more. Let go and let God. Time to plan my calendar!

Here are a few ways I decided to take my chances for 2021!
