Making Snacks with the Kids
CollectiveBias asked us to go shopping this week for tortillas, only problem was we couldn’t use them how we normally would. You know, no tacos, egg burritos or even regular burritos. So it would take a bit of thinking on my part, a few google searches and then to test them through Little A. See, he’s a picky eater.
He doesn’t like eggs, because they are baby birds.
No chicken either because that’s a bird.
Hamburger is okay as a patty but not crumbled.
He’s funny on colored foods too, ya know green is bad because it doesn’t look right, etc.
So making him look over the recipes with me would help me decide. But I didn’t expect him to get excited the minute I turned it to www.missionsmenu.com and looked at the cookbook. I mean there were a few things on it but they didn’t really impress me but it did him. What was it? Oh PB& J with banana in a tortilla shell. Are you KIDDING me? He would like it though, most kids probably would (ekk not me) but I’d try it because maybe he would like it and it was somewhat healthy right? Better than potato chips. BTW he doesn’t eat chips either.
As we were searching through tons more sites he saw smores and I found one that was really interesting but instead of doing it on a BBQ I would try it in the microwave for only a few seconds instead of 5 minutes. I printed the recipes for both and one other fruit one and off to Walmart we went. Just to be fair I kept my mind open to the tortillas because we were suppose to talk about how we picked them, what attracted us, where they were and how they were presented. We had three different sections with tortillas, that impressed me.
First section was in the fridge by the cheese, I was shocked as I had never noticed it there before. But in all fairness I normally grab my Kraft singles and go, never looking around. I’m one for familiarity. I don’t like the idea that they were already cold though. What if I had wanted to wait a few days? Now I have to keep them cold. So I avoided them. Next up the Mexican/oriental aisle but nothing there except tacos and fajitas. So off we went as we gathered ingredients on my list. Finally in the bread aisle was a HUGE selection. We grabbed one type, I immediately recognized Mission Toritillas as that is what we always get but not the others. I saw corn and flour (flour is what we get), some that focused on carbs, no carbs, low carbs, wheat, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, etc. Moving on we went to grab the fruit and to my surprise they had display in the back corner by the bakery of tortillas. All four sides were full of different types but more amazing was how many of them were Mission tortillas but different types, ie spinach, small, medium, large, carbs, etc. I grabbed one spinach and a bag of white small for Little A and off to the house we went to make our creations.
In the end, the kids had:
Smores (using tortillas)
banana wrapped around peanutbutter & jelly wrapped in a tortilla
noodles wrapped in a tortilla
