What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is when you are feeling worried, nervous, or uncomfortable. This can happen at any part of the day even if you are happy, you can suddenly get that creepy feeling come over you. I tend to get anxious in crowds, taking tests, but I also get them randomly for no reason. The bible calls anxiety worry. When you are mentally distressed about a situation and we all know there were many in the bible that probably had anxiety right before their battles. I’m sure Moses, Mary, and Jonah all had a bit of anxiety.

When we suffer from anxiety there are medications, meditations, and people to talk to. One of those people is God, but many of us forget about him during this time. Reading the bible can help with anxiety. It is even better if you can remember the verses you can repeat them in your head to calm yourself when you are troubled.

Bible verses have always helped me get through troubling times or even times I just needed guidance from God. Don’t forget you can pray using scripture for stronger prayers. There are many scriptures about anxiety and how to deal with it.

Write them in a notebook, journal, or index cards and carry them around with you. Life can certainly feel that you are being squeezed like a lemon, but thankfully this isn’t always the case.

  • We are hard-pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. – 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Sometimes our anxiety comes from some type of fear. I have an issue with heights and going over bridges, others may get anxious in crowded spaces. As a little girl, we had someone break into our home, so at times I get anxious when I hear something like a banging of a window (from a tree) or a loud noise in the middle of the night. This is a time you can call on God and ask him to help get you through it or think of something else.

  • When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. – Psalm 56:3

When you see someone anxious or stressed out say a kind word to him. Ya never know how much good you are doing. In fact, I challenge you to say something nice to a stranger on a street.

  • “An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.”Proverbs 12:25

My husband recently lost his job, now we knew a few weeks before and most of the time I’d be a basket case right before it. Not this time. There was something different this time, I trusted God, I put it in prayer, and I know that He has my back.

  • Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. – 1 Peter 5:7
  • Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. – John 14:27

Many would wonder why one should be thankful during trouble. There are many reasons, maybe there is a better job is my thinking. Yes, it’ll be uncomfortable until we start getting that income but this is obviously a place we are meant to move through.

  • Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. -Philippians 4:6-7

This past year I saw many people worry about when and how they were going to get their next meal. My own town, as well as many across the country, had bare shelves in the supermarkets. Most of the time when something was needed and others found out, they were given the item needed. Schools ended up passing out food, which showed me there was nothing to fear.

  • Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. – Matthew 6:34

God states in the bible that he doesn’t want us to be burdened with anxiety, he wants us to be free from this so we can focus on doing good, on doing his work. If our mind is cluttered with stress and worries we can’t focus on the task at hand. We won’t even be able to hear him if he speaks with us because we are constantly thinking about whatever the stress/worry/fear is.

  • I want you to be free from anxieties. -1 Corinthians 7:32

Finally, sometimes our anxiety comes in the way of fear, being totally afraid of something. Our stomach turns into a knot, we may even feel we are going to get sick right then and there. This is when we must lean on God. I remember many times that fear got in my way, but I also remember some of the best times when fear began to petrify me but I instantly thought about how God would be there to protect me, because he states it int the bible and I prayed.

  • For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline. – 2 Timothy 1:7

Keep in mind that anxiety all stems from fear and uncertainty, which comes from the devil. Stay in prayer and reading bible verses about anxiety to help battle anxiety when it comes knocking.
