5 Finger Prayer Craft for Kids

Are you looking for a fun, easy, and hands-on way to teach your kids about prayer? Look no further than the 5 Finger Prayer Craft for Kids! This craft is perfect for kids in elementary school and teaches them about the 5 finger prayer. It’s a fun and creative way to personalize their prayer and make it more meaningful.

Why We Teach Our Kids to Pray?

As Christian parents, one of our most important jobs is to teach our children how to pray. Prayer is a way for our children to communicate with God, ask for forgiveness, guidance, understanding, or even mercy from people in need. It keeps us humble and rooted in our faith, especially during the tough times in life. Prayer is a way for us to see God’s plans for us and ask for his help in guiding us through the tough times that life may throw at us.

What is the 5 finger prayer?

The 5 finger prayer is a simple, easy-to-memorize prayer that uses your five fingers for each part of the prayer. The thumb is for those closest to you (family and friends), the pointer finger is for those in authority (teachers, firefighters, doctors, and police officers), and the middle finger is for your leaders and those in government (pastors, mayors, presidents, etc.). The ring finger is for those who are sick, weak, or really need some prayers right now. Finally, the pinky finger is for you, your prayers, requests, and praises.

Five Finger Handprinted Prayer Craft

To create the Five Finger Handprinted Prayer Craft, you will need your child’s hand, paint (acrylic paints work best), paper (we suggest using construction paper), and a pencil or marker.

Five Finger Prayer craft materials

5 Finger Prayer Activity Materials –

  • Child’s hand
  • paint (Acrylic paints is what we used)
  • paper (printer paper is thing, I suggest construction paper)
  • pencil/marker

Instructions:

  1. Have your child wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water. Make sure the skin is completely dried before starting this craft.
  2. Have all the paints ready for your child to use. Have your child paint their palm red. Now let them paint each finger a different color.
  3. Once their hand is completely covered in paint, help them place their hand down on a piece of white paper. Press firmly and lift the hand up.

In case you have a child that can’t be covered in paint because of sensitivity issues, have your child place their hand on a piece of white paper and trace it.

  1. Have your child write keywords to help them remember what to pray over.

Palm- Jesus. Thank him. (The red paint is to remind us of the blood he shed for us.) Thumb- Those close to you. Family and friends. Pointer/index- Those that give you direction. Teachers, therapists, coaches, firemen, and police officers. Middle- Those in leadership positions or government. Pastors, presidents, vice presidents, and mayors. Ring- Those who are sick, poor, need miracles, or someone that needs prayer. Pinky- You, your needs.

Ways to Personalize Your Prayer Craft Handprint

You can personalize your prayer handprints by changing the colors, writing things like “please pray for me,” or including scripture verses. Here is a short bible verse to include with your craft: “If any of you need wisdom, you should ask God for it. He is generous and eager to give to all who ask.” James 1:5

Another suggestion would be to put it in a nice picture frame (you can buy them for a dollar at Dollar Tree) and hang it near your child’s bed. They’ll love to see their artwork and it’ll work as a constant reminder until they realize how to do it on their own. Once the children learn to pray, you may want to increase their faith by adding a prayer journal, which you can download here.
