Meatloaf: With Bread or Oats?

April 27, 2010 By · 1 Comment

How do you make your meatloaf? I know this sounds like a silly question but this is one of those things that could split up a family. Okay, not really but you know what I mean. I grew up eating meatloaf with oats in it, the husband grew up eating it with bread crumbs. Now which one is right?

To be honest I don’t think there is a wrong way to eat it, of course he does and absolutely refuses to eat it if there is any oats in it. Since I grew up watching it be made one way that is the way I make it and I must say my kids have never complained when I make it with oats. Actually when I do it tends to be more moist, when I make it with the bread it becomes dry, which I don’t like. Even the hubby doesn’t like the one with the bread, I’ve seen his face.

Currently there are over 1,540,000 results for “Meatloaf recipe” found in Google and there are over 100 meatloaf recipe books, etc. Last night I tried my hands at the “Easy Meatloaf” recipe found at All Recipes.com.  It is obvious that everyone has their own taste when it comes to meatloaf, my favorite was always having a surprise in the center.

My parents use to make it and experiment with it, we would sometimes have corn in it, cheese in the center or even mushrooms. I have learned NOT to surprise my family, you would be shocked at the faces that I see when they bite into something they had no clue of.  How do you make your meatloaf? Do you do surprises? My oldest loves me making them in the form of footballs with cheese melted over them.

Fun Writing Exercise for Kids (or you)

April 26, 2010 By · 1 Comment

Over the weekend the kids told me they were bored and wanted me to give them an assignment. Yes, an assignment but asked that it not be some boring book one. So instead I told them to write a book, of course I got the whole, “How do I start? What should it be about?Etc”

I immediately started thinking, how could I make this fun and different from just yammering a few scenarios at them. Then it hit me…..

Go get me 3 of my books and 2 of your books. They quickly grabbed books, it didn’t matter what. I closed my eyes with each book, flipped through it, landed my finger on a page and we wrote the sentence. Since we did this with 5 books we were able to come up with ideas, now you could do it with three and get the same results.

The kids quickly sat down laughing as they began to write, each one had their own corner of the room with a different idea in mind. I can’t wait to see what they created. Ever try it?

Got the Car Registered

April 26, 2010 By · 2 Comments

Well, we had to say goodbye to the rental. We had it for a week and I loved every minute of it, but must admit that even though I drove it twice I would prefer to have a truck or a van. I’ve discovered that I cannot drive low to the ground, there is something that scares me about being so low. When we had the truck and the van I was never scared of driving either but in cars I have a horrible fear. Not to mention my vision is always blocked in a car. Anyone else have either issue?

First we had to make sure it would pass inspection which meant taking it back and forth from one place to the next until finally it passed. We also had to wait for the glass people to come out and fix our windshield, they were suppose to come the previous weekend but had ordered the wrong part and then they forgot on the following appointment. They finally made it this weekend. (about time)

When we showed up at DMV it was like no DMV I’d ever been inside. The one in Arizona had been huge, people were lined up outside there. Here it was more like you were waiting to get seen at a bank. People were sitting in chairs but the numbers went quickly. Phew.

So the car is registered and next we’ll be getting me a car. Not sure what but hopefully something much nicer than the one we currently have. There’s just something about the one we have that bothers me and no it isn’t the way it looks. It’s just something else, something about it.

That was our weekend. What did you do?
